The world knew Pope Francis as a humble, generous, and caring man. But was he really like that in person?
“He could be very, very kind, I mean, the times that I spoke to him, very, very kind, very fatherly and encouraging but if he was upset with somebody, he could be pretty scary,” said Frank Pavone on a recent episode of America Uncanceled. “He was known to lose his patience at times and I think, sometimes we saw that even on the public stage.”
Pope Francis leaves behind a mixed legacy. He is celebrated for his charity to the poor and bringing awareness to the difficulties of the least fortunate. His pontificate was also a historic one as the first Jesuit and first South American pope and for the great diversity of his cardinal appointments.
His lack of clarity on central Church teachings, however, ostracized many traditional Catholics and his vagueness allowed the mainstream media to spread false interpretations of Catholic teachings and beliefs, creating confusion among both the Church faithful and non-Catholics. Rumors of a temper and dictatorial governing style behind closed doors also contributed to a muddled public image.
Pope Francis’ mixed legacy is coming to a head as the world remembers him in the days following his death and as the Church prepares for the next pope.
Who will be his successor? The answer to that is unclear but the time is ripe for an extraordinary and devout man to lead the Church through this troubling time.
